MARCH 20
It's billed as a "romantic crime comedy-drama thriller." It controversially (at the time) won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival due to its "unconventional" nature. It's sexy, super-violent, and darkly hilarious. It's director David Lynch's Wild At Heart celebrating it's 35th anniversary with a restored print on the big screen!
After serving prison time for a self-defense killing, Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage) reunites with girlfriend Lula Fortune (Laura Dern). Lula's mother, Marietta (Diane Ladd in an Oscar nominated performance), desperate to keep them apart, hires a hit man to kill Sailor. But he finds a whole new set of troubles when he and Bobby Peru (Willem Dafoe), an old buddy who's also out to get Sailor, try to rob a store. When Sailor lands in jail yet again, the young lovers appear further than ever from the shared life they covet.
Critics and audiences didn't quite know what to make of David Lynch's fairytale romance in 1990, but its eclectic and over-the-top style paired with a sumptuous visual flair, peak Laura Dean, and Nicolas Cage delivering lines like "did I ever tell you that this snakeskin jacket represents the symbol of my individuality and my belief in personal freedom?" has cemented Wild At Heart in super Cult Movie status.
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote in 1990: 'Starting with the outrageous and building from there, he ignites a slight love-on-the-run novel, creating a bonfire of a movie that confirms his reputation as the most exciting and innovative filmmaker of his generation.'
