Widowed farmer, Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), with a brave but brutal military past, decides not to join up when the British arrive in 1776. Hailed as "the hero of Fort Wilderness" at every town and tavern in the colonies, Benjamin is haunted by his war-time deeds. However, when his son enlists and is later captured by the enemy, the former soldier must abandon his new-found pacifist principles in order to rescue his oldest child (Heath Ledger), and forms a regiment of Carolina patriots, whose guerrilla tactics prove pivotal to the US war effort.

Directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) and written by Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan), and featuring gripping performances by Gibson and the ebullient star of Heath Ledger- The Patriot may not be the most historically accurate tale, but it boats meticulous attention to Colonial era detail and is a stirring Revolutionary War epic to commemorate America's 250th birthday in one of its most storied, colonial cities!
