OCTOBER 30
The groundbreaking monster movie made by Universal studios- 1931's FRANKENSTEIN starring Boris Karloff screens in a restored version on our historic big screen. A pre-movie-code adaptation of Mary Shelley's genre-defining novel, Frankenstein was transgressive for its time (though almost family-friendly by today's standards). Frankenstein was created just after the advent of sound in film and like many early 'talkies' thus had no musical score! We're excited to present this immersive viewing of Frankenstein with an original score performed live on synth-piano by virtuoso musician Jeff Rapsis!
This iconic horror/science fiction film follows the obsessed scientist Dr. Henry Frankenstein as he attempts to create life by assembling a creature from body parts of the deceased. Aided by his loyal misshapen assistant, Fritz, Frankenstein succeeds in animating his monster, but it escapes into the countryside and begins to wreak havoc. Frankenstein searches for the elusive being and eventually must confront his tormented creation.
Jeff Rapsis (who's also an early-film-expert) will introduce the film, perform a live musical score to emphasize the atmosphere and drama of Frankenstein, and conduct a Q&A post film. Make it a mad-scientist double feature with director David Cronenberg's The Fly starring Jeff Goldblum at 8:30!
