Set sail with a beloved maritime movie to coincide with Newport, RI's world famous Boat Show Week.
Based on a true story, Wind is a true cult classic for sailors and sporting enthusiasts, containing some of the best, most realistic, on deck big-boat sailing sequences ever portrayed.
In more than 140 years of competition, the United States has lost the America's Cup only once. WIND is the dramatic, fictional story of an upstart group of American challengers whose drive to win back sailing's top prize plunges them into a world where money, power, love and ambition are inextricably intertwined.
In 1983, yacht sailor Will Parker (Matthew Modine) leads an American crew financed by millionaire Morgan Weld (Cliff Robertson) to defeat during the America's Cup race against an Australian crew. Determined to get the prize back, Will convinces Morgan to finance an experimental boat designed by his ex-girlfriend Kate's (Jennifer Grey) new beau, Joe Heisler (Stellan Skarsgard). When the boat is completed, the Americans head to Australia to reclaim the cup.
Much of the plot takes place in and many of the film's port scenes were filmed on location in and around Newport, Rhode Island. America's Cup skipper Peter Gilmour, whose aggressive sailing during the 1987 defender selection series earned himself a place on the defender boat for the America's Cup, was "Sailing Master" for the film, on board for all of the sailing sequences.
