OCTOBER 17
Welcome to our Folk Horror Party! We're excited to present a very unique night that fuses live music by an excellent Newport folk band with a screening of 1973's iconic The Wicker Man- a cult-favorite that created it's own genre: Folk horror.
Princess June will play a vibe-setting live concert at 7:00 followed by the film screening at 8:00. (Keep your eyes on Princess June, they're the next big thing in the Folk-Rock scene!) But then keep your eyes on...
THE WICKER MAN has had an enduring fascination for audiences since its release in 1973. A unique and bone-fide horror masterpiece, brilliantly scripted by Anthony Schaffer (Sleuth, Frenzy) and featuring an astounding performance by the legendary Christopher Lee. Director Robin Hardy’s atmospheric use of location, unsettling imagery and haunting soundtrack gradually builds to one of the most terrifying and iconic climaxes in modern cinema. Psychedelically 70's and rife with traditional- and contemporary folk songs (such as the subsequently popular Willow's Song), this evening of excellent live Folk music followed by the subtle scares of The Wicker Man is sure leave a lasting impression.
Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) arrives on the small Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the report of a missing child. A conservative Christian, the policeman observes the residents' frivolous sexual displays and strange pagan rituals, particularly the temptations of Willow (Britt Ekland), daughter of the island magistrate, Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee). The more Sergeant Howie learns about the islanders' strange practices, the closer he gets to tracking down the missing child.
