Touch Of Evil: Classic Film Noir w/ Pinot Noir Tasting
Tuesday, Feb 3
FEBRUARY 27 - 28
Topping many Best Of Movie Lists for 2025 (including this humble author's) and now nominated for an ALL TIME RECORD 16 Academy Award Nominations, auteur Ryan Coogler's SINNERS is a cinematic marvel to behold. As all good movies should be, Sinners is best devoured on the big cinema screen- back now for 2 screenings before it wins big at the Oscars!
Mississippi, 1932: Returning from Chicago to their hometown to escape their violent past, twin brother bootleggers Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore (Michael B. Jordan) aim to open a juke joint in a former sawmill. Facing Jim Crow racism and trying to leave their troubled lives behind, the brothers soon discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. Written and Directed by Ryan Coogler.
A period-piece that transports you back in time to segregated 1930's American South, Sinners succeeds as a gothic crime-thriller and a character study of colorful small-town denizens looking for a release- all before bloodthirsty vampires come to spoil the party! Oh yea, did we mention it's a horror movie?
But to pigeon-hole Sinners as genre picture feels disrespectful. It's sumptuously shot, breathtakingly paced, and features the best amalgamation of music in a movie (mostly Blues and Celtic) since O Brother, Where Art Thou? With its biting social commentary, Sinners is timely. Its cinematic spectacle makes it timeless. While respectful to a plethora of Coogler's film and cultural influences, Sinners crafts a wholly original world of song, hope, violence, lust and love, good and evil, awe and horror, heroes, villains, and all that lies in the textured earth between.
Nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (Coogler), Best Actor (Jordan), Best Supporting Actress (Mosaku), Best Supporting Actor (Lindo), Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography (Autumn Durald Arkapaw), Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson), Best Original Song (I Lied To You), Best Casting, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound at the 2026 Academy Awards.
Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Canton, Peter Dreimalig, Lola Kirke, Omar Benson Miller, Li Jun Li, and Delroy Lindo
