THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC W/ LIVE MUSICAL SCORE

APRIL 1

The Passion Of Joan of Arc w/ Live Musical Score performed by Jeff Rapsis: It looks truly stunning on our big screen!

A classic of the Silent-Film age, this film tells the story of the doomed but ultimately canonized 15th-century teenage warrior. On trial for claiming she'd spoken to God, Jeanne d'Arc (Renee Falconetti) is subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of church court officials (Eugene Silvain, Jean d'Yd). Initially bullied into changing her story, Jeanne eventually opts for what she sees as the truth. Her punishment, a famously brutal execution, earns her perpetual martyrdom.

Helmed by Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer the film is renowned for its striking cinematography and intense use of close-ups. Adapted meticulously from Joan of Arc's actual trial transcripts, star Falconetti's performance and devotion to the role are now legendary. Though hailed as a masterpiece by contemporary critics the film faced governmental and church controversy, pressure from both resulting in substantial cuts to the original film. Dreyer's Final Cut was thought lost for over 50 years until an original print was found in a mental institution outside Oslo, Norway.

Considered an all-time-great film, The Passion Of Joan Of Arc is presented here with a sweeping live musical score on synth-piano by accompanist/Silent-Film-Expert Jeff Rapsis. Jeff will introduce the film and conduct a post-film Q&A.
