Winner of 4 Academy Awards including 1980's Best Picture, Best Actor for emerging star Timothy Hutton, and Best Director for Robert Redford- Ordinary People is an emotional powerhouse- an arresting portrait of psychological hurt beneath a seemingly perfect, wealthy suburban family. The only film Robert Redford doesn't appear in to feature in our Remembering Robert Redford series- he nevertheless summons stunning performances out of Hutton, Sutherland, Hirsch- and especially Mary Tyler Moore playing against type (also nominated for an Oscar). The result is Redford's best directed feature, and one of the most affecting films of the last 50 years.

Tormented by guilt following the death of his older brother, Buck, in a sailing accident, alienated teenager Conrad Jarrett (Timothy Hutton) attempts suicide. Returning home following an extended stay in a psychiatric hospital, Conrad tries to deal with his mental anguish and also reconnect with his mother, Beth (Mary Tyler Moore), who has grown cold and angry, and his emotionally wounded father, Calvin (Donald Sutherland), with the help of his psychiatrist, Dr. Berger (Judd Hirsch).
