THE MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY

Newport Boat Show week sets sail with an epic early Hollywood film about one of history’s most famous ships. Starring Clark Gable at his charismatic peak as noble mutineer Christian Fletcher and the inimitable Charles Laughton as sadistic Captain Bligh. Winner of 1935’s Best Picture Academy Award, Mutiny On The Bounty remains a defining film of cinema, pristinely shown on our big screen. The Hollywood Reporter raved that it was “one of the greatest films of all time”, with “the epic sweep of the sea itself.”

As the cruel captain of the HMS Bounty, a ship bound for Tahiti, William Bligh (Charles Laughton) wins few friends. When the crew members finally tire of his abuse, Fletcher Christian (Clark Gable) leads a mutiny, resulting in Bligh's unceremonious removal from the ship. While Christian and the remaining crew sail on to Tahiti, Bligh becomes intent on exacting revenge, and he targets Roger Byam (Franchot Tone), a sailor who had actually tried to stop the mutiny.
