MARCH 25
Always a contender for being considered the best film-noir ever made (included in Time Magazine's "All Time 100 Movies" list, In A Lonely Place celebrates its 75th anniversary in all its atmospheric, beautiful black-and-white glory. See one of Bogey's best restored on the big screen, but first indulge in a pinot noir tasting to get that Film-Noir feeling!
When gifted but washed-up screenwriter with a hair-trigger temper Dixon—Humphrey Bogart, in a revelatory, vulnerable performance—becomes the prime suspect in a brutal Tinseltown murder, the only person who can supply an alibi for him is seductive neighbor Laurel (Gloria Grahame) with her own troubled past. Certain her new love interest is innocent, Laurel stands by Dixon, but as the police continue pressing him, Dixon begins to act increasingly erratically. The blossoming love affair suffers as Laurel begins to wonder if Dixon really might be a killer. Will suspicion, doubt, and Steele's inner demons come between them?
The emotionally charged In a Lonely Place, freely adapted from a Dorothy B. Hughes thriller, is a brilliant, turbulent mix of suspenseful noir and devastating melodrama, fueled by powerhouse performances. An uncompromising tale of two people desperate to love yet struggling with their demons and each other, this is one of the greatest films of the 1950s, and a benchmark in the career of the classic Hollywood auteur Nicholas Ray.
Screened here in an exquisite 2k restoration DCP from the Criterion Collection. Doors & Pinot Noir Tasting @ 6:45, Movie @ 7:30.
