Made in Newport: The JPT celebrates films shot in city
The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center (The JPT) will showcase Newport’s starring role in Hollywood productions with a week-long “Made in Newport” film series running from August 2 to 7.
The series pairs screenings of movies filmed in the coastal city with local business pop-ups, live music and beverage tastings, offering audiences a chance to see familiar Newport landmarks on the big screen.
“It’s no secret that our amazing City by the Sea has something that Hollywood adores — it was hard to miss a major production filming downtown just a month ago!” said Alex Whitney, general manager of The JPT. “We’ve programmed an unforgettable week of the very best Tinseltown productions to film in Newport, with genres for all tastes.”
The series opens Aug. 2 with “Jazz on a Summer’s Day,” the 1958 documentary about the Newport Jazz Festival, preceded by live jazz from the Gerry Beaudoin Trio at 3 p.m. The evening features Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” at 7 p.m., with folk band Princess June opening and s’mores served to match the film’s camping theme.
