Summer of 86 Series
Do you feel the vibe shift? It's not just the Summer wind, it's a cinematic blast to the past. 40 years ago to be precise- the care-free-cool summer of 1986! That fluorescent neon summer of crop-tops, home-aerobics, and Aviator sunglasses. Madonna's Papa Don't Preach, Berlin's Take My Breath Away, and Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer dominated the music radio charts. Shoulder-pads, bright colors, and big hair were fashionably ubiquitous, Trivial Pursuit was the #1 game in America, and a new-fangled technology was the #1 product in America: the VCR. 1986 was a landmark year for movies as people enjoyed unprecedented access to their favorite films... (Heck, even the President of The United States was the former president of SAG-AFTRA.)
But the new concept of 'home video' didn't keep people away from the movie theater. Indeed, the 1986 Box Office was big-time excessive as befit the decade, and the Summer of '86 blockbusters broke box-office records. Ferris Bueller. Aliens. Stand By Me. Top Gun. I mean, it's hard to believe in today's movie landscape how many certified-cinematic-classics played on movie screens across America AT THE SAME TIME! You can make a strong case that Summer of 1986 had the best seasonal lineup of new film releases all time. Well, at least until 1987 (next year's a doozy!).
We couldn't fit all the great flicks from that season in, but we've got a rad selection of the most bitchin' blockbusters. (If these do well, we could add more, its up to you nostalgic film-goers!) So put on your bright tank-tops or neon spandex, don those Aviators (it's ok, you can wear 'em inside), and go back in time to the utterly awesome and carefree cinema of the Summer of '86!
