Celebrate Valentines Day with a Saturday afternoon screening from the lush era of Silent Film: The Temptress starring Greta Garbo. A Hollywood icon, Garbo would not only define feminine stardom on the silver screen, but establish the first (and enduring!) example of a Tinsel Town 'sex symbol'. The Temptress in turn is the vehicle that launched Garbo to the A-List and an international audience. She would soon be a household name, equally popular among women and men. The Temptress finds her fatally attractive to men- The New York Mirror commented how Garbo's "alluring mouth and volcanic, slumbrous eyes enfire men to such passion that friendships collapse." Despite a troubled start that saw Garbo's fellow Swedish director fired after 10 days, and the starlet's sister dying of Tuberculosis during shooting, The Temptress is a melodrama with emotional heft that subverts expectations.
Featuring an introduction and live musical score performed on synth-piano by virtuoso accompanist Jeff Rapsis! Audiences were mesmerized 96 years ago by Greta Garbo and The Temptress.
