2023 Academy Award Nominated Films

2022: A hard year in so many ways, but what a resilient year for movies. After the film industry's two worst years on record in 2020 and 2021, last year the movie theater came roaring back to life with a refreshing mix of mass-audience crowdpleasers and invigorating art-house fare. Well-received blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water literally saved cinema from going the way of the film-projector and the pent-up pandemic creativity yielded so many smaller movies of lasting merit. From dark with shades of gray character studies like Tar (6 nominations), absurdist fables like The Banshees Of Inisherin, to the little Sci-Fi engine that could be indy-cinema's champion, Everything Everywhere All At Once (11 nominations!), the past year of movies proved a medley that truly has something for all tastes. Incredible stuff!
